Sleep is a complex neurological state, with its primary function of providing rest and restoring the body’s energy levels.

The importance of sleep could be seen from the fact that people spend about one-third of their lifespan in sleep.

Regardless, that being said just how much sleep do we need?

SLEEP

Sleep can be defined as the natural state of rest during which your eyes are closed and you become unconscious, this event normally occurs at night

During sleep, most of the body’s systems are in an anabolic state and this helps to restore the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular system which are vital processes that maintain mood, memory, and cognitive function, and play a large role in the function of the endocrine and immune systems.

  1. We spend 1/3 of our lives asleep
  2. Sleep is an active process
  3. Some brain activity increases during sleep
  4. Specific hormones increase during sleep
  5. We need less sleep as we get older

  • Memory processing
  • Dreaming

 

Types of Sleep

Sleep is divided into two broad types:

  • Non-rapid eye movement (non-REM or NREM) sleep
  • Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

The amount of sleep you need each day will change over the course of your life.

  • Infants 16-20
  • Toddlers 12-14
  • Pre School 11-13
  • School Age 10-11
  • Teens 9.5-10
  • Most adults need 7 ½ -8 hours to function well
